Following the outbreak of the American Revolution at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts in March, 1775 the Americans fortified themselves at various areas of higher ground (hills) to protect Boston from British seizure. On June 17, 1775 the Americans successfully defended themselves from the British in the first significant battle of the war on Bunker Hill near Boston.
