The Catholic flag, originally known as the Flag of the Vatican City, was adopted June 7, 1929. It was first flown by Papal States merchant and fishing vessels from 1825-1870. The Catholic flag is divided vertically into two equal stripes, yellow at the hoist end and white at the fly end. The white stripe bears the traditional papal emblem, the crossed keys of St. Peter beneath the papal tiara.
