Located in Syracuse, New York, Syracuse University students and athletes are officially called the Orange, although they are sometimes still called by their old-time names – Orangemen and Orangewomen. It is not surprising that the only official school color at Syracuse is orange. The University boasts an excellent basketball team; the men’s team took the NCAA Division I Championship in 2003. They are currently in the Big East Conference and their mascot is Otto the Orange. Syracuse was founded in 1870 as a private coeducational institution. Vic Hanson, who played for the Orange in the 1920s, was inducted into both the basketball and football Hall of Fame.
