Nauru Flags

The Nauru flag classically reflects the hopes, ideals and location of the island nation. The flag was chosen from a local flag competition and was adopted on January 31, 1968, Independence Day. The Nauru flag depicts Nauru’s geographical position, one degree under the Equator, in a blue field bisected by a single horizontal gold stripe and charged with a white, 12-pointed star just beneath the line on the hoist side. The separation of the blue flag into two equal parts recalls the saga of the island’s first inhabitants who were to have been brought to earth on two pillars or boulders. The twelve points on the star represent the island’s twelve original tribes.
