The Bahamas is an island country made up of more than 700 islands and islets in the Atlantic Ocean. It is just north of Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Bahamas may refer either to the country or the larger island chain it shares with Turks and Caicos Islands. The Bahamas was the site of Columbus’ first landfall in 1942. It became a British Crown colony in 1718 when Great Britain resettled thousands of American loyalists who brought slaves and established plantations. The Island nation later grew into a haven for freed Africans and escaped slaves from Florida. The Bahamas became an independent Commonwealth realm in 1973 yet retained Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch.
