Episode One: Recap
Episode one of the Freedom & Glory podcast highlights the inspiring story of Dwight Morris, founder of Carrot-Top Industries. Born in Washington, DC, Dwight graduated from Duke University and began his career in hospital administration. Despite holding a stable, well-paying job, Dwight felt unfulfilled. "There were things going on behind the scenes in hospital administration that bothered me a lot," he shared. Determined to create a business aligned with his values, Dwight began brainstorming ideas.
His inspiration came unexpectedly while reading the Wall Street Journal. An article about booming flag sales following America’s bicentennial piqued his interest. "I couldn’t even find a flag for my own house," Dwight recalled. That moment sparked the idea for Carrot-Top Industries, a company that would become one of the nation’s most successful flag businesses.
Challenges and Success
Starting a business wasn’t easy. "For the first five years, most intelligent people would say I failed," Dwight admitted. With only 34 orders in the first year, he faced a steep learning curve in accounting, marketing, and operations. Yet, his persistence paid off. "There were years where I would double each year, and I was feeling wonderful. Every day I’d go into work and think, 'What am I going to do today to build this thing?'”
A Family Affair
While Dwight’s vision was key, he credits his family’s support for keeping him motivated. "My wife, Lynn, was really the only support I needed," he said. His children also pitched in, helping pack orders and lick stamps, making Carrot-Top a true family endeavor.
An American Legacy
Dwight’s commitment to selling American-made flags was rooted in his deep respect for what they represent. He understood that the Stars and Stripes are more than just fabric; they stand for the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who gave everything for our great country. Partnering with companies like Annin Flagmakers, Dwight ensured that Carrot-Top’s products embodied the highest quality and American craftsmanship.
As Dwight reflected on his journey, he shared his pride in building something that could be passed to the next generation. "To me, one of the ultimate success stories in business is whether you sell it or it goes to your daughter or son... that second generation," he said. His daughter, Liz Morris, now leads Carrot-Top Industries, carrying forward his vision while embracing her own.
