Rhode island Flags
The Rhode Island state flag epitomizes the hope, principles and character of the “Ocean State”. The Rhode Island flag features thirteen gold stars encircling a gold anchor on a white field. The thirteen stars denote Rhode Island’s status as one of the original colonies and the 13th state to ratify the Constitution. A gold anchor, a symbol of hope, centers the flag. The anchor visually reinforces the Rhode Island state motto: “Hope” which appears below it. The motto is taken from Hebrews 6:18-19, “hope we have as an anchor of the soul.” Rhode Island’s first colonists fled religious persecution in Massachusetts due to their Christian beliefs. The Rhode Island flag was adopted in 1897.
