The Maine state flag respectfully captures the natural beauty and humble virtues of “The Pine Tree State”. The Maine flag consists of the state’s coat of arms set on a field of blue. A farmer and seaman stand at each side of the shield noting the occupations of the states’ early settlers. A pine tree in the shield stands between the two men. Above the coat of arms shines the North Star and Maine’s state motto: “Dirigo” (I Lead). The word “Maine” is below the coat of arms in capital letters. Maine was the 23rd state to join the Union on March 15, 1820.
