The state of Mississippi voted in “The New Magnolia” flag design on November 3, 2020, and the new Mississippi flag is available to pre-order today. The new flag will replace the old flag design which was in use for 126 years and had the Confederate battle emblem on it. The new Mississippi flag was designed by Rocky Vaughan, with design support provided by Sue Anna Joe, Kara Giles and Dominique Pugh. "The New Magnolia" flag is anchored in the center field by a clean and modern magnolia blossom, a symbol long-used to represent Mississippi and the hospitality of its citizens. The magnolia represents Mississippi’s sense of hope and rebirth, as it often blooms more than once and has a long blooming season. The new design is sleek and updated to represent the forward progression of Mississippi.
The circle of twenty stars represents Mississippi as the twentieth state of the United States of America and is anchored by the gold five-point star at the top. This star represents Mississippi's first peoples, the indigenous Native American tribes of the land that would become Mississippi. At the bottom of the circle of white stars is the white text “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The color blue in the main field of the flag echoes the blue of the American flag, representing vigilance, justice, perseverance, while the bands of red represent hardiness and valor. The gold lines and the gold stamen of the magnolia are a nod to the rich cultural history of Mississippi, specifically the visual arts, literature, music and performing arts which originated in Mississippi.
On June 28, 2020, the Mississippi Legislature passed a bill to develop plans to remove the old flag from public buildings within 15 days of the bill’s effective date. The bill required the exclusion of the Confederate battle flag and the inclusion of the motto “In God We Trust.” Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves signed the bill into law on June 30, 2020, and a nine-person commission was formed to oversee the design of a replacement flag with oversight by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Thousands of new flag designs were submitted. After reviewing and narrowing down all of the flag designs over four meetings, the magnolia flag design was proposed on September 2, 2020. On November 3, 2020, the flag was voted on during the general election. A majority of Mississippi voters voted yes for the new magnolia design.
