The name change goes into effect on February 8, 2025, the BSA’s 115th year anniversary. These changes reflect an already evolving program, which recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of welcoming girls into Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA programs.
Worth noting is that Scouting America™ will continue to be completely separate from Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., which has provided educational opportunities for young women for over 100 years. The inclusion of girls into Scouting America™ offers an alternative path for young women to develop life skills and pursue their goals. Since the change, 176,000 girls and young women have joined the BSA, with over 6,000 earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.
In a recent press release, Roger A. Krone, the president and Chief Executive Officer of Scouting America™, spoke of the change: “Though our name will be new, our mission remains unchanged: we are committed to teaching young people to be prepared for life. This will be a simple but very important evolution as we seek to ensure that everyone feels welcome in scouting.”
Show your support for this exciting new chapter by purchasing your own Scouting America™ flag, perfect for scoutmasters, scouts, and anyone who appreciates the rich history and lineage of scouting.
Why is Boy Scouts of America Changing Its Name?
The Boy Scouts name change marks a significant step in the organization's efforts to create a more inclusive environment. Over the years, the organization has steadily evolved, making notable changes such as allowing gay youth to join in 2013 and welcoming gay leaders in 2015. The goal of the rebrand is to reflect this new chapter. More than a name change, it allows any youth in American to feel welcomed and included.

What is the Meaning Behind the Name “Scouts?”
The scout name meaning has a rich history. It was originally inspired by military scouts who performed reconnaissance during wars. British military officer Robert Baden-Powell eventually discovered that young boys enjoyed his military training books and adapted the content into Scouting for Boys in 1908.
Instead of focusing on military techniques, the book featured survival skills, educational principles, character-building, and leadership skills. It was a huge hit. In response, scout patrols opened throughout England. The Boy Scouts Association and The Girl Guides were formed and terms like "scouting" and "boy scouts" naturally emerged. American businessman WD Boyce later established a similar organization in America after a British Boy Scout famously helped him find his way through the streets of London.
Although the current scouts no longer focus on military training, the life skills they teach help young people grow into confident and capable adults.
